Broadcast 7/31/09 – KVCR host Roger Bowman had guests Alan Sims of the Center for Litigation and Consumer Real Estate Education (CLCREE), a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that provides free legal services to victims of predatory lending and consumer real estate issues, and law student James Cuzzolini, a volunteer with CLCREE. Both answered questions about loan modification obstacles many viewers are encountering as well as the questionable techniques many loan brokers and appraisers used when writing loans during the bubble, and what people can do if theirs was intentionally inaccurate.

Broadcast 8/7/09 – KVCR had guests Rod Tawasha, associate vice president and home preservation manager for Chase bank, and Larry Sharp, president & CEO of Arrowhead Credit Union, in the studio to answer host Roger Bowman’s questions about their banks’ responses to the mortgage crisis. The discussion included the foreclosure process, short sales, deeds in lieu, principle reduction, forbearances, and other means of helping home owners retain their homes or exit gracefully. They candidly discussed which options were viable and which were not widely offered. Additionally, Chase discussed their 28 regional home ownership centers in which a distressed owner can obtain and appointment and meet with a loan modification advisor for Chase, who becomes that person’s primary point of contact during the modification and/or foreclosure process — a real person with a desk, a direct extension and email address.

Together they discuss credit scores, credit improvement and home loan modifications. Many people seeking to modify their loan operate under the premise they need to demonstrate a severe financial hardship in order to qualify. Is this the correct approach? Or is this an erroneous assumption? Expert guests were Pastor Herera, the director of the Dept of Consumer Affairs for LA, Larry Roberts, the Lead Deputy District Attorney for the Real Estate Fraud Unit of San Bernardino County, and Jennifer Brennan, and attorney with the Federal Trade Commission in Los Angeles. Broadcast 6/26/09 – It’s Your Call, KVCR’s call-in talk show, had guests from organizations that fight for the rights of tenants who find themselves on notice that their rental unit is being foreclosed upon.

One-third of foreclosures nationwide have renters at the time of bank repossession. Both single-family homes and multi-unit properties are being foreclosed, and in many instances it’s the owner’s investment property that is the first to go when the owner is struggling financially. This leaves renters in a precarious situation. These issues were discussed by our guests Enrique Acuna, attorney for the Inland Empire Latino Lawyers Association, Alan Sims, CEO For the Center for Litigation and Consumer Real Estate Education, and Eulalio Castellanos, attorney for the Inland Counties Legal Services. Both are non-profit organizations that provide legal assistance for those who cannot afford their own lawyer.
